Booking a green trip, how to choose?
Green travel or EcoTourism refers to responsible travel practices that takes into account conserving the environment, and sustaining the well-being of the local population.
4 principles of ecotourism:
Travel to natural destinations
You don’t have to travel far away from home for a nice little break! How about exploring local areas? A Natural park, a weekend near the sea. For shorter distance, choose the train instead of flying or driving your car. If you must fly, try to book a direct flight. On average, non-stop flights reduce carbon emissions by 100 kg per person compared to connecting options. 🛫
Build environmental awareness 🌿
This can be as simple as picking up pieces of trash in the park and joining volunteering group for a beach clean up. 🏝
Choose vacations that demand less resources and make less of an impact on the environment
Prefer camping/ glamping to luxury hotels for instance. 🏕 If you fancy traditional vacation adventure, opt for low impact activities on the environment, such as hiking, canoe kayak, bike ride and horse riding.
Provide financial benefits and power to local people ♻️
Support locals and artisans directly by buying homemade souvenirs (artisanal arts) and consume family local dishes in the food market instead of tourist activities, ensuring that your money goes directly toward stimulating the local economy and providing jobs. Seeking out local experiences like homestays and hiring local guides is the best way to learn about a new culture!
After you’ve choose and booked your trip, packing smart is the next step to reducing your footprint!
[Products in your suitcase 👝]
Reduce Your Plastic 🛁
- Your toiletries: Bring your soap and shampoo bars instead of bottles (Plus it uses less space in the suitcase!) or use the one available in the hotels.
- Pack a reusable water bottle for your road trip.
- Buy a bamboo or biodegradable toothbrush and plastic free toothpaste ( tablets with fluoride or without).
- For us ladies, consider silicone sanitary cup or period underwear, it's life changing!
- Bring your tote bag for the beach and shopping
Using harmless products for the environment
- Choose a sunscreen without harmful ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate which cause damage to the ecosystem.
Packing light
The key is selecting interchangeable pieces by focusing on basic color such as black and white, then you can add a variety of colorful accessories (shoes, jewelries).
This method allows you to pare down the number of clothes you need while making it easy to change up your look!
The main objective is to minimize our impact on the planet by relying on biodegradable, compostable, or reusable products!
You have to hold yourself accountable for your actions, and that’s how we’re going to protect the Earth. – Julia Butterfly Hill
