You don't have to be an athlete to be healthy, but humans were not created to sit at a desk for 8 hours a day!
Diet is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, as is regular exercise!
I was inspired to write this article because I rested completely for 3 weeks, with no intense exercise, just a few walks in the park, and I can feel the difference. I usually exercise 5-6 times a week, doing different activities (boxing, HIIT, yoga, long walks, weight training) and I can tell that my body feels less strong, my energy level is low and my stress level is high. My body needed a rest, but I'm happy, I'm back!
Let me tell you 3 reasons why your body needs a workout!
1. It boosts your energy levels!
Exercising allows your body to function more efficiently because you have more oxygen to fuel your body's cells. By doing it regularly, you will strengthen your body and as a result, you will feel less tired from your daily activities. It's never easy to get out of bed early to go to the gym, but I promise you'll have plenty of energy for the rest of the day! If you're more of an evening person, ending your workday at the gym will make you feel more relaxed and calm (it will decrease your stress).
The hardest part is sticking to a routine and staying consistent will make you feel different. Discipline is the key!
2. Protect against many chronic diseases
I just started reading "How Not to Die" by Michael Greger, M.D. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. In summary, the vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented by simple diet and lifestyle changes.
Regular exercise can lower blood pressure, improve heart health and sleep quality.
3. Help with weight management
Most of us start exercising to lose weight, and it does help! Healthy eating is still the most effective way to reach our weight goal! A regular program can help lower your BMI (body mass index). As you get stronger, your muscles will "burn" more calories and effectively speed up your metabolism to lose weight.
Ultimately, find activities that you enjoy and can do regularly! This can be as simple as taking a walk or run in the local park, or walking to the store instead of taking public transportation.
If you're more adventurous, try group activities (if you don't know where to start) near your home and work (fitness classes, cycling, weight training) or join a team (basketball, soccer...), there are lots of choices! The most important thing is to keep your body moving and enjoying it.
