Have you ever heard of the "dirty dozen" in terms of nutrition?

Updated: Oct 30

The term 'Dirty Dozen' in nutrition refers to a list of fruit and vegetables known to contain the highest levels of pesticide residues when grown conventionally, making it essential to consider buying them organically.

The list is published annually by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organisation specialising in environmental health issues.

Grapes are a perfect example contain up to 15 different pesticides.

The Dirty Dozen list typically includes:

  • Strawberries

  • Spinach

  • Sweet peppers

  • Nectarines

  • Apples

  • Grapes

  • Peaches

  • Cherries

  • Pears

  • Tomatoes

  • Celery

  • Potatoes

Therefore, consumers who are concerned about pesticide exposure may choose to prioritize purchasing organic versions of these foods when possible.

On the other hand, the Clean Fifteen comprise the 15 conventional crops that are the cleanest and least likely to be contaminated by pesticide residues. These products generally have lower levels of pesticide contamination than the others, making them more appropriate choices for consumers who do not have access to organic products or who prefer not to buy them.

Here is the list of the fifteen cleanest products:

  • Avocados

  • Sweet corn

  • Pineapples

  • Onions

  • Papayas

  • Sweet peas (frozen)

  • Aubergines

  • Asparagus

  • Broccoli

  • Cabbage

  • Kiwi

  • Cauliflower

  • Mangoes

  • Honeydew melon

  • Cantaloupe

By incorporating these food into their diet, people can enjoy nutritious products while reducing the potential health risks associated with exposure to pesticides.
